ach the poor childrenYou mean?
I mean first of all that as a kid and as a (young) adult, very little could have made me less interested in something than being provided with a “just for kids” version. I usually get the sense that things done “for children” or “for youth” are really “for the adults who want to connect to them” and are too condescending to read as serious and compelling. Secondly, that several parts of the text strike me as rather precious and cutesy. (See also: children’s liturgy vestments.) Thirdly, that Catholics have had a Children’s Mass for decades now and it hasn’t exactly resulted in a widespread culture of exuberant young Catholics. The minority of young Catholics who *are* exuberant seem to be largely reacting against such tendencies in liturgical practice, whether or not they experienced them as children. So despite the fact that I’m not an Anglican and this doesn’t really affect me, I still think it’s a dweeby liturgical move. Ach, the poor children!
